HNU Junior Student’s Research Result Published on International Journal

Published:2015-06-17

The paper Relation between operating parameters and desalination performance of capacitive deionization with activated carbon electrodes, written by Liu Danyang, Huang Kuan, Xie Leijie and the instructor Tang Hao of Hunan University (HNU), was first published online on the Environmental Science: Water Research & Technology on June 4.

The Environmental Science: Water Research & Technology is one of the four key journals of the Royal Society of Chemistry, together with Energy & Environmental Science, Environmental Science: Nano, and Environmental Science: Processes & Impacts. The four journals respectively focus on publishing high-quality innovations in the fields of water, energy, Nano, and environmental influence based on professional review.

Capacitive deionization (CDI) as a newly emerging water treatment technology has great potential in sea water desalination, brackish water, circulating water treatment and sewage reuse. It is expected to be a substitution for ion exchange and reverse osmosis process to conduct desalination.

Based on numerous experiments, Liu Danyang demonstrated the influence of different operating parameters on the desalination performance of CDI, and accordingly established statistical model to judge the desalination performance of CDI in different operating factors. The research is significant for the industrial development of CDI. Besides, Liu also published another paper on CSCD journal Technology on Water Treatment, and obtained two national invention patents.

The research result was presented by Huang Kuan, a junior student from the HNU College of Civil Engineering, at the 4th Annual World Congress of Advanced Materials (WCAM 2015) held from May 27 to 29. Huang did a splendid job in 20-minute presentation in fluent English, which was highly appraised by the audiences at the conference. Several international institutions specially asked for more information about the research. The Nobel Prize winner (2010) Akira Suzuki who was also invited to attend the conference encouraged Huang and took a group photo.
